Challenge yourself to create a linoleum print with multiple values of a single color. The dramatic impact of linocut is given depth and interest by using various carving techniques to create tonal textures. Through demonstrations and hands-on experimentation with small test plates, you will be introduced to carving and printing numerous weights of parallel gouges, cross-hatching, stippling, gestural marks, and thin-to-thick lines. You will then transfer an original image to a prepared 8 x 10 inch plate, carve it, and then, using your choice of oil or water-based inks, ink the plate and print it using an etching press. The use of barens, for applying hand pressure instead of a press, will also be explored. Participants are encouraged to bring sketches or source images of possible subjects that involve a variety of values.
